Baking is where most kids fall in love with the kitchen. It is measurable, it is hands-on, and it ends with something you can eat. At Cookiddoo in Kanata, baking runs through everything we teach — bread, pizza dough, cupcakes, macarons, bento cakes and cookie boxes — in a studio built entirely around children ages 4–15.
Where to find baking classes for kids in Ottawa
Ottawa has plenty of adult baking workshops. Options built for children are far rarer, and most of what you find falls into one of three categories:
- Adult classes that accept older teens. Fine for a confident 15-year-old, uncomfortable for a nine-year-old who needs a step stool and a slower pace.
- Community-centre drop-ins. Affordable and social, usually one-off, rarely building a skill from one session to the next.
- Dedicated kids’ studios. Equipment sized for children, ratios capped, recipes chosen so that a beginner finishes with something they are proud of.
Cookiddoo is west Ottawa’s only kids-only cooking studio, and baking is the largest part of what we do.
What a baking class at Cookiddoo looks like
A masterclass runs 2 hours and costs $55 per child. Every child works at their own station with their own ingredients, so nobody watches someone else do the interesting part.
A typical session runs like this:
- Aprons, hands, safety. Knife rules, oven rules, and why we wash hands twice.
- The technique of the day. Creaming butter, laminating dough, whipping meringue to stiff peaks, or kneading until the gluten window forms.
- Hands-on baking. Measuring, mixing, shaping, and getting it into the oven.
- Decorating. The part every child remembers, and where the creative choices are genuinely theirs.
- Boxing it up. Everything a child bakes goes home with them.
What kids actually bake here
- Bread and pizza dough — kneading, proofing, shaping, and the science of why dough rises.
- Cupcakes and layer cakes — including the strawberry bento cakes that are consistently our most requested class.
- Cookies — New York style, gingerbread, and decorated cookie boxes around the holidays.
- Pastry — scones, tarts, chocolate fondant, and profiteroles for older kids.
- Seasonal projects — Halloween mummy pops, Easter cupcakes, Mother’s Day and Teacher’s Day gift sets.
Ages, groups and ratios
Classes are open to ages 4–15, grouped so the pace matches the age. Sessions cap at 10 children per instructor, and up to 11 when two staff are on the floor. Younger bakers get more scaffolding and pre-measured stations; older kids work closer to a real recipe and are trusted with knives, mixers and the oven under supervision.

Baking classes near me: what to check before you book
Whichever studio you choose, these five questions separate a good experience from a disappointing one:
- Does every child get their own station? Shared stations mean some children spend the class watching.
- What is the group size? Above 12 children per instructor, individual help disappears.
- Is the equipment child-sized? Adult kitchens make small hands tentative.
- How are allergies handled? Ask before booking, and ask specifically about nuts, eggs, dairy and gluten.
- Does the child take their bake home? The walk to the car holding a box they made is most of the memory.
Allergies and dietary needs
Tell us at booking. We adapt recipes for common allergies and dietary restrictions where we safely can, and we will tell you plainly when a particular class cannot be adapted.
