Kids from about age 6 can pack most of their own school lunch if the job is set up for them: one rule for what goes in the box, ingredients prepped once a week, and a short list of ideas they can make without help. The rule we teach in class follows Canada’s food guide plate: half the box vegetables and fruit, a quarter protein, a quarter whole grains, and water to drink. Below are 12 lunches sorted by age, a 30-minute Sunday prep plan, and how to keep the box cold until noon.

The lunch box formula

Part of the boxPick one or two
Vegetables and fruit (half)Cucumber and pepper sticks, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, apple slices, grapes, berries, clementine
Protein (a quarter)Hard-boiled egg, hummus, cheese cubes, chicken strips, beans, yogurt
Whole grains (a quarter)Whole wheat wrap or pita, crackers, pasta salad, rice, homemade muffin
DrinkWater

Kids learn the formula faster with a box that has compartments: one compartment, one part of the plate.

12 lunches kids can make, by age

Ages 6 to 8: assemble and pack

  • Cracker stackers: whole grain crackers, cheese slices, cucumber rounds; the child builds their own stacks at lunch.
  • Hummus box: hummus with carrot and pepper sticks, pita triangles and grapes.
  • Pinwheels: a wrap spread with cream cheese, rolled around ham or turkey and spinach; an adult slices.
  • Yogurt parfait: plain yogurt, berries, a spoon of granola in a separate small container so it stays crunchy.

Ages 9 to 11: simple prep with a knife

  • Pasta salad: leftover pasta, diced vegetables, cheese cubes, a spoon of dressing.
  • Chicken wrap: sliced cooked chicken, lettuce, shredded carrot, rolled and cut in half.
  • Egg salad sandwich: chopped boiled eggs with a little mayonnaise on whole grain bread.
  • Mini pizza bagels: made the night before, eaten cold or warmed at home on half days.

Ages 12 to 14: cook it and pack it

  • Rice bowl: rice, cooked chicken or tofu, cucumber and edamame, a small sauce on the side.
  • Homemade muffins: a batch on Sunday, frozen, one goes into the box each morning.
  • Thermos soup or chili: heated in the morning, kept hot in a preheated thermos.
  • Burrito bowl: beans, rice, corn, cheese and salsa in layers.

Two of these are regulars in our classes: hummus with homemade cheese crackers, and chicken nuggets with a salad the kids cut themselves. Check your school’s allergy rules before packing nuts, seeds or sesame.

A 30-minute Sunday prep plan

  1. 10 minutes: wash and cut vegetables into sticks; store them in a container with a damp paper towel.
  2. 10 minutes: boil a batch of eggs; cook a pot of pasta or rice for the first half of the week.
  3. 5 minutes: portion crackers, granola and dried fruit into small containers.
  4. 5 minutes: write the week’s five lunches on a sheet on the fridge. The child picks; the formula stays the same.

With the prep done, a 9-year-old packs a full box in about five minutes.

Keep it safe until lunchtime

  • Health Canada recommends ice packs or frozen drink boxes to keep lunches cool; a frozen water bottle does the same job and is thawed by noon.
  • Your fridge should be at 4°C or lower. Perishable foods like meat, eggs and dairy should not sit out for more than two hours, so the ice pack goes right next to them.
  • For hot food, fill the thermos with boiling water for a few minutes, empty it, then add the hot food.
  • Wash the lunch box every day, including the lid seals.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can kids pack their own lunch?

From about 6, with the ingredients prepped and a simple formula. By 9 or 10 most kids can make a sandwich, a wrap or a pasta salad on their own.

What do I put in a lunch box for a picky eater?

One food they always eat, one they sometimes eat, and one small new item. Kids who help make the lunch eat more of it; see our guide on cooking with picky eaters.

How do I keep a lunch cold without a fridge at school?

An insulated bag with an ice pack or a frozen drink box placed next to the perishable food.

Are there hot lunch ideas without a microwave?

Yes: soup, chili, pasta or rice in a preheated thermos stays warm until noon.

How can my child learn to cook more than sandwiches?

Our evening course for ages 8–13 and single master classes teach knife skills, doughs and sauces that turn into better lunches. Links are in the box above.

Is a lunch made the night before safe?

Yes, if it goes straight into the fridge at 4°C or lower and into an insulated bag with an ice pack in the morning.
