Homeschool families in Ottawa can book Cookiddoo cooking classes during the school day, when studios and community programs are usually full of preschoolers or closed. We run hands-on workshops at your home, your co-op’s venue or a community centre in Ottawa and Gatineau: one-time classes or a series of 4 to 10 weeks, for ages 4 to 15, in English or French. Every child cooks a full recipe from scratch and eats it, and the lesson brings in maths, science and reading along the way.

What a homeschool cooking series covers

Our series follow the same structure as our school and daycare programs: each week builds a skill and ends with a dish. Typical topics:

  • Kitchen safety and hygiene, knife skills from age 7
  • Doughs: pizza, fresh pasta, quick breads
  • Sauces and cooking on the stove
  • Baking and decorating
  • Planning a balanced plate with Canada’s food guide

Where cooking fits in your curriculum

SubjectWhat kids do in the kitchen
MathsMeasuring with cups and grams, halving and doubling a recipe, reading oven time
ScienceYeast making dough rise, emulsions in a dressing, heat changing texture
LanguageReading a procedure in order, writing their own recipe card
HealthFood groups, handwashing, safe temperatures, reading allergy labels
Social studiesDishes from other countries: Italian pasta, Japanese-style bowls, Mexican flavours

Groups by age

We split mixed-age co-ops into age bands, or keep siblings together and split tasks inside one group:

  • 4–5: mixing, pouring, shaping and decorating; shorter sessions of about 45 minutes.
  • 5–9: following a recipe step by step, first knife work from 7.
  • 9–12: full recipes, the stove with supervision, timing two dishes.
  • 12–15: planning a menu, cooking it start to finish; see also teen cooking classes.

One instructor works with up to 10 children; we add an assistant from the 11th, and a session can take up to 30 children.

What the host needs

  • A table or counter with power and water, and room for the group.
  • A stove and oven only if the chosen menu needs them; without a kitchen we run a no-cook format with no-bake recipes, assembly and decorating.

We bring the ingredients, tools, aprons and portable equipment, and we clean up. Series pricing follows our group program rates listed on the Schools & Daycares page; for a single class at home, send the date and the number of kids for a quote. The travel fee is arranged individually depending on location.

Frequently asked questions

Yes: one-time workshops or a series of 4 to 10 weeks at your venue in Ottawa or Gatineau.

Can siblings of different ages join one class?

How many children can join?
