Children learn to cook fastest in a series of lessons with the same instructor, where each lesson adds one technique to the last. In Ottawa, Cookiddoo teaches cooking lessons for kids 4 to 15 in three formats: a single 2-hour lesson in Kanata (from $55), the Junior Chef Academy, an 8-lesson evening course for ages 8 to 13 ($680 + HST), and a private lesson at your home for your child and their friends ($485 for up to 8 children). A single lesson shows whether a child enjoys cooking; eight lessons are usually enough to cook a simple dinner at home with an adult nearby.

How many cooking lessons does it take to learn to cook?
For a child of 8 to 13, eight lessons of two hours cover the core skills: safe knife work, heat control, dough, pastry, handling raw meat and putting a full meal on the plate. After each lesson in the course, the child has a dish to try at home:
| Lesson | Technique | Dish to try at home |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Knife safety and vegetables | Chopped salad with homemade vinaigrette |
| 2 | Eggs and heat control | French-style omelette |
| 3 | Fresh pasta and sauce | Hand-cut ribbon pasta |
| 4 | Shortcrust pastry and custard | Butter cookies |
| 5 | Ground meat and safe temperatures | Italian meatballs with mashed potatoes |
| 6 | Yeast dough | Mini focaccia |
| 7 | Choux pastry and chocolate | Profiteroles, with an adult at the oven |
| 8 | Graduation challenge | A full meal the child plans, cooks and plates |
The fall 2026 course runs October 21 to December 16, with no lesson on November 11. Dates, open spots and booking: Junior Chef Academy.
Getting the most from each lesson
- Repeat the dish within a week. A technique sticks when the child cooks it again at home while the lesson is fresh.
- Let the child lead. Read the recipe together, then let them set out the ingredients and the tools before anyone turns on the stove.
- Keep the same day. A weekly rhythm, like the course’s Wednesday evening, builds the habit faster than lessons spread across months.
- Give them a station. A cutting board, a knife that fits their hand and a towel of their own make cooking at home feel like the lesson.

Private cooking lessons at home
A private lesson suits families who want a lesson on their own schedule, kids who learn better with friends they know, and homes outside the west end. We bring ingredients, tools, gloves and aprons, set up at your kitchen or dining table and clean up afterwards. Each child cooks their own portion. Without a free oven or stove we switch to a no-cook menu. Lessons run in English or French. The travel fee is arranged individually depending on location. For a lesson for one or two children, write to us with the date and your address and we will suggest the best format.
