A good beginner cooking class for kids starts with the knife, the cutting board and the stove, and builds from there one technique at a time. The Junior Chef Academy by Cookiddoo in Kanata is built that way for ages 8 to 13: week 1 covers knife safety and vegetables, and by week 8 each child plans, cooks and plates a full meal. Children who have never cooked before are the course’s main audience. Younger kids, or anyone unsure, can start with a single 2-hour master class.

Is my child ready for a cooking class?

Most children are ready for a hands-on beginner class when they can:

  • follow a two- or three-step instruction without a reminder;
  • stand and work at a counter for 15 to 20 minutes at a time;
  • listen to a short safety talk and repeat the main rule back;
  • wash their hands properly and keep them away from their face while handling raw ingredients.

Age matters less than these habits. In our programs children use real knives from age 7 with an instructor beside the group, and the course starts at 8 because by then most kids can carry a skill from one week to the next.

What a first cooking course teaches, week by week

Beginner habits to practise at home

  1. Read the recipe out loud before starting. Reading first prevents most surprises halfway through.
  2. Set out every ingredient. Chefs call this mise en place; it turns a stressful recipe into a calm one.
  3. Use the claw grip. Fingertips tucked, knuckles guiding the blade.
  4. Clean as you go. A clear board is a safe board.
  5. Taste and adjust. Salt, acid, sweetness: ask your child what the dish needs.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need any cooking experience for the course?

No experience is needed. Week 1 starts with knife safety and kitchen basics, and every week builds on the last one.

What is the best age for a first cooking class?

Children can join a hands-on class from age 4 with tasks matched to their age. For a multi-week course, 8 to 13 works best, because kids can carry a skill from one week to the next.

Will my child use a real knife?

Yes, from age 7, with an instructor beside the group and a cut-resistant glove when the task calls for it.

What does the course cost?

$680 + HST for 8 classes of 2 hours, or two payments of $340 + HST. Ingredients, equipment and an apron are included.
