Among the life skills parents want for their children, cooking is the one that uses most of the others at once: reading and following instructions, measuring and simple maths, planning time, working safely with heat and knives, cleaning up, and feeding yourself and others. A weekly cooking course turns those into habits. In Ottawa, Cookiddoo runs the Junior Chef Academy for ages 8 to 13 on Wednesday evenings in Kanata.

Life skills a cooking course teaches

Life skillWhat it looks like in the kitchen
PlanningReading the recipe first, setting out ingredients, deciding what goes on the stove first
Time managementGetting pasta and sauce ready together; using the 20 minutes while dough proofs
Practical mathsMeasuring, weighing, halving or doubling a recipe, reading temperatures
SafetyKnife grip, hot pans, separate boards for raw meat, safe cooking temperatures
Food literacyKnowing what is in a dish, tasting and adjusting, trying new vegetables
ResponsibilityCleaning the station, washing tools, putting things back
ConfidenceServing something you made to your family

Why cooking works as a weekly life-skills class

Life skills stick when they are practised repeatedly with feedback. A cooking course meets every week with the same group and instructor, and each class depends on the last one: the knife grip from week 1 is used every week after, the heat control from week 2 makes the meatballs in week 5 possible. By the final class, children plan, cook and plate a full meal on their own, which is the clearest test of independence a parent can see.

Cookiddoo’s classes were featured on CTV Ottawa in July 2026, in a segment on how cooking builds children’s confidence. More background: why cooking matters for a child’s development and 7 reasons kids should learn to cook.

What to look for in any life-skills program

  • Children do the work themselves; adults guide and correct.
  • Small groups, around 10 per instructor.
  • A clear progression from week to week, written down.
  • Something to show at the end: a meal, a project, a certificate.
  • Skills that carry home. Ask what your child can do differently after the last class.

Frequently asked questions

Is cooking really a life skill for kids?

Yes. Cooking combines planning, maths, safety, hygiene and responsibility in one task, and children use it for the rest of their lives.

What age should kids start learning life skills like cooking?

Simple kitchen tasks can start at 4. A structured weekly course works best from 8, when children can carry skills from one week to the next.

Are there life skills classes for kids in Ottawa?

Cookiddoo runs a weekly cooking course for ages 8 to 13 in Kanata, plus 2-hour classes for ages 4 to 15. Schools and daycares can book after-school cooking series on site.

Does the course help picky eaters?

Children often try new foods once they have cooked them. Our guide for parents of picky eaters looks at what the research says.
