Teens aged 12 to 15 in Ottawa can learn to cook in three formats with Cookiddoo: an evening cooking course in a small group (ages 8–13), a private hands-on class for a group of friends at your home, and workshops run at schools and community centres. At this age the goal is running a recipe alone: real knife work, cooking on the stove, timing two dishes at once and cleaning up as they go. Each format ends the same way — the teens eat what they cooked and take the recipe home.

What a 12- to 15-year-old can learn to cook

Teens learn fast once they hold the knife and the pan themselves. Our older groups (12–15) work through the same skill ladder we use in school programs, with more of the recipe in their hands at every step.

SkillWhat it looks like at 12–15
Knife workDicing an onion, slicing vegetables evenly, cutting chicken on its own board, using the claw grip without reminders
StoveBrowning meat for a Bolognese, cooking pasta to the right texture, making a sauce that thickens without lumps
DoughPizza dough and fresh pasta from flour and eggs, rolled and cut by hand
BakingMeasuring by weight, reading oven time and doneness, frosting and finishing a dessert
PlanningReading a recipe before starting, setting out ingredients, getting a main and a side ready at the same time

Kitchen safety is part of every lesson: handwashing, separate boards for raw meat, keeping handles turned in, and checking chicken with a thermometer (74°C for pieces, per Health Canada) instead of guessing by colour.

Menus teens actually want to cook

Teens pick harder dishes when the recipe is theirs. For a private class or a teen party at home the group chooses one menu in advance and every guest cooks their own portion from scratch:

  • Fresh pasta with Bolognese, Alfredo or pesto, rolled and cut by hand.
  • Mini burgers and fries, shaped, seasoned and cooked by the teens.
  • Pizza from the dough up, with their own toppings.
  • Brownies, cupcakes or mini bento cakes for the sweet side.

Each menu comes with one drink they make themselves, such as a mango lemonade or a chocolate milkshake. Baking menus need an oven at your place; with no kitchen free, we pick a no-cook menu.

What to look for in any teen cooking class

  • Every teen cooks their own dish at their own station; watching a demo for an hour teaches little.
  • Real knives with supervision and a clear safety routine at the start.
  • Groups of about 10 per instructor, so questions get answered.
  • Allergies collected in writing before the class and checked against every ingredient.
  • A recipe card to take home, so the dish gets cooked again that week.
  • Recent reviews from other Ottawa parents. Ours are on the reviews page.

Keep the skills going at home: a four-week plan

The fastest progress happens between classes. Give your teen one dinner a week to own, start to finish, including the dishes:

  1. Week 1: breakfast for the family — scrambled eggs, toast, cut fruit.
  2. Week 2: pasta with a homemade tomato or meat sauce.
  3. Week 3: a sheet-pan dinner: chicken pieces and vegetables, checked with a thermometer.
  4. Week 4: the teen plans the menu, writes the grocery list and cooks it.

Younger siblings can follow along with our recipes kids can cook themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is 15 too old for a kids cooking class?

Our programs run up to age 15, and groups are put together by age, so a 15-year-old cooks with other teens and gets the more advanced version of each recipe.

Can my 14-year-old join the evening course?

The course is designed for ages 8 to 13. For a 14-year-old who already cooks with confidence, write to us and we will look at the group. Check the course page for dates.

Can a group of teen friends book a private class?

Yes. We bring a 2-hour hands-on class to your home anywhere in Ottawa and Gatineau. Send the date, the number of teens and their ages, and we confirm availability and help choose the menu. The travel fee is arranged individually depending on location.

Do teens use real knives?

Yes. Knife skills start from age 7 in our programs, with an instructor beside the group; teens work with real knives, a stable board and a cut-resistant glove when the task calls for it.

Can the class be in French?

Yes. We run classes, parties and workshops in English and French. Mention the language when you book.

What if a guest has a food allergy?

Tell us about every allergy when you book. We plan the menu around it wherever possible and confirm the details with you before the class.

How do I book?

Use the “Ask about a date” button on this page or call +1 613-710-0554 with the date, the number of teens and their ages.
