A sushi burger is a Japanese fusion dish where seasoned sushi rice is pressed into buns that hold fish, vegetables and sauce, just like a burger. In our Ottawa kids cooking class, children build their own sushi burger layer by layer from start to finish.
Kids learn to cook sushi rice with rice vinegar, cut fish, vegetables and nori using safe, kid-friendly knife techniques, layer and press the ingredients, and plate the sushi burger like a restaurant dish. It is a hands-on introduction to the basics of Japanese cooking.
The sushi burgers are made with sushi rice, fish, fresh vegetables, nori and sauce. Common allergens include wheat, eggs, milk and citrus, so please tell us about any allergies when you book and we can adapt the recipe.
The recipe is beginner-friendly and guided step by step, so it suits children aged 4 to 15. Younger cooks get extra hands-on help with cutting and shaping the sushi rice.
Each child eats the sushi burger they made from scratch and takes home a personalized certificate, the sushi burger recipe to remake in Kanata, and an optional photo from the class.
The sushi burger kids cooking class runs about two hours at Cookiddoo Studio, 301-150 Katimavik Rd, Kanata, Ottawa. It is a drop-off format for up to 10 children, and parents are welcome to stay if they prefer.
