Kids learn the classic British 'rubbing-in' method — working cold butter into flour, mixing a light dough, cutting neat rounds and baking golden scones. They also whip fresh cream and plate the dessert like a real English tea party. It's a hands-on kids cooking class in Kanata, Ottawa.
The focus is the traditional rubbing-in technique: keeping the butter cold, rubbing it into the flour until crumbly, and mixing gently without overworking the dough. That's the secret to tall, flaky scones, and your child does it with their own hands.
Yes. Each young baker whips cold heavy cream to soft, pillowy peaks and learns when to stop so it doesn't turn to butter. Whipping cream by hand is one of the favourite parts of this scones cooking class.
Just a few pantry staples: flour, cold butter, a little sugar, baking powder, milk and eggs for the scones, plus heavy cream for whipping. Kids can finish their scones with optional jam or fresh berries.
Absolutely. The recipe is beginner-friendly and we welcome children ages 4 to 15, with steps adapted to each age. Little ones get help with the oven while older kids take on the mixing and shaping.
Every participant leaves with a portion of scones baked by their own hands, a take-home recipe for a home tea party and a named certificate — crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, served with whipped cream.
